Armenian opposition proposes tougher penalties for public denial or justification of genocide
The “Hayastan” faction of the National Assembly has proposed amendments to Article 136 of the Armenian Criminal Code, aiming to toughen the penalties for publicly denying or justifying genocides and crimes against humanity.
The draft was presented in the National Assembly by the faction’s secretary, Artzvik Minasyan. “Statistical information also serves as a basis for us, showing that no criminal proceedings have ever been initiated under this article, despite numerous cases where public statements denying, justifying, or downplaying the Armenian Genocide have been made,” he said.
Representatives of the NA Committee on State and Legal Affairs and the Government expressed negative opinions regarding the “Hayastan” faction’s proposal.
Artyur Hovhannisyan, secretary of the Civil Contract (KK) faction, described the opposition’s proposal as a fake agenda.
